Description: The beloved real-life story of a woman in the Alaskan wilderness, the children she taught, and the man she loved. “From the time I’d been a girl, I’d been thrilled with the idea of living on a frontier. So when I was offered the job of teaching school in a gold-mining settlement called Chicken, I accepted right away.” Anne Hobbs was only nineteen in 1927 when she came to harsh and beautiful Alaska. Running a ramshackle schoolhouse would expose her to more than just the elements. After she allowed Native American children into her class and fell in love with a half-Inuit man, she would learn the meanings of prejudice and perseverance, irrational hatred and unconditional love. “People get as mean as the weather,” she discovered, but they were also capable of great good. As told to Robert Specht, Anne Hobbs’s true story has captivated generations of readers. Now this beautiful new edition is available to inspire many more. “The memoir reads like an old-fashioned novel, a heartwarming love story with the added interest of frontier hardships and vividly portrayed characters.”—Publishers Weekly

Description: As online courses proliferate, teachers increasingly realize that they have to connect with their students as they would in face-to-face classes. They have to provide true opportunities for inspirational and meaningful learning, rather than a sterile experience of clicking within a labyrinth of links. With the specific purpose of switching emphasis from the technical issues of online teaching to the human implications of teaching and learning through the Internet, Tisha Bender draws on her extensive research, her training of online faculty, and her own online teaching experience, to create a fresh vision of online pedagogy. Discussion-Based Online Teaching to Enhance Student Learning consists of three parts: Theory Practice Assessment The author shows how she applies learning theories to online discussion-based courses. She presents a wealth of suggestions and techniques, illustrated by real examples, for stimulating and managing online discussion effectively, and for improving teaching practices. The book concludes with methods for assessing the efficacy of online courses. This accessible and comprehensive book offers an engaging and practical approach to online teaching that is rooted in the author's experience and enthusiasm for creating a virtual environment that engages students and fosters their deep learning. This is a book for all educators and administrators in higher education, in any discipline, engaged in, or contemplating offering, online classes that involve discussion or collaborative learning. It is relevant both to faculty teaching a hybrid and face-to-face classes, and courses conducted entirely online.

Description: MY STORY IS about an addict whose name is Elijah Wayne Jackson, Eli for short. This has many characters, mainly drug addicts. I have woven the Lady in Red on the assumption that she is a product of his paranoia. The story line, I hope, will bring the public to an awareness of addicts and the things they do when they are high and ingesting drugs. The story is very explicit and complete with mystery and science fiction overtures. My story takes place in a ghetto in Brooklyn, New York, around the late 1980s, a time when crack cocaine was strongly used. Although other addicts and their highs are being depicted, it is only to give the reader a sense of how things play out in the drug world as opposed to the real world. Basically, I am trying to bring science fiction to the ghetto in a more believable sense. Along with the mystery of the Lady in Red, there is another main character that comes into play, and his name is James. James is a mystery within himself. To go into more detail about my story and its characters, you will just have to read my story.

Description: Life takes a strange turn when Richard Allan Gordon, thirty years old and as white as they come, discovers that, as a result of identity theft, five-year-old Jada Reece Gordon bears his name. The product of a middle-class Jewish upbringing, Richie finds himself completely in love and lust with Jada’s mother, LaTisha, a twenty-five-year-old African American nursing student, and longs to be a father to her child. Richie and LaTisha’s story takes place at the intersection of love, race, and identity, as the couple is forced to examine their relationship in light of the terrible event that takes the life of a young black father and catapults their midwestern city into chaos. As riots erupt around them and Richie discovers a secret about his own past that challenges his long-held ideas, he and LaTisha must come to grips with the forces that threaten to tear their relationship apart. A novel that doesn’t shy away from the racism that dwells within the unexamined hearts of so many Americans, Twelfth and Race may shock or outrage some readers, yet its story is ultimately timely, honest, and hopeful.

Description: Gateway and the Last Priest of the Avatar is the second book in the Gateway series. This book takes off at the end of book one, after our heroes face the high queen of Acara’s assassin cube. The assassin cube was an amalgam of souls forced by dark magic, together with the purpose of capturing Royal—her lost son—and Simon Monroe. In addition, it was supposed to kill Lethia and Reverend Monroe, his kidnappers. As a result of the fire at the church and Tisha’s quick thinking, our heroes defeated the mechanisms of the high queen. Yet as a result of battle, for the first time, our heroes were separated in splintered groups. Reverend Royal Monroe, Hue Lee, Lethia, Maximus, and Wisdom Simms were left to figure out a way off of the Lost Islands, which were at the end of Acara. Simon Monroe, Reverend Monroe, Mr. Ben Lee, Officer Purcell Simms, and new comrades were in a race of time against another creation of the dark queen, the Marauder, which sought to stop them from finding their only way to Acara. Lastly, Tisha, alone, is left to the Wonders of Acara City. The Wonders sought to transform her into the essence of something she was not before. From Balimore to Acara City to the Lost Islands, all roads led everyone to the enigmatic red desert, a direct confrontation with the High Queen, and finally, the birth of the last priest of the Avatar.

Developmentally informed approaches to assessment and intervention are illustrated by vivid case examples. Observation exercises and quick-reference summaries of each developmental stage facilitate learning. New to This Edition *Incorporates a decade's worth of advances in knowledge about attachment, neurodevelopment, developmental psychopathology, intervention science, and more. *Toddler, preschool, and school-age development are each covered in two succinct chapters rather than one, making the book more student friendly. *Updated throughout by new coauthor Michael F. Troy, while retaining Douglas Davies's conceptual lens and engaging style.

Description: Elvis Presley musicals, beach romps, biker flicks, and alienated youth movies were some of the most popular types of drive-in films during the sixties. The actresses interviewed for this book (including Celeste Yarnall, Lana Wood, Linda Harrison, Pamela Tiffin, Deanna Lund, Diane McBain, Judy Pace, and Chris Noel) all made their mark in these genres. These fantastic femmes could be found either twisting on the shores of Malibu, careening down the highway on a chopper, being serenaded by Elvis, or taking on the establishment as hip coeds. As cult figures, they contributed greatly to that period of filmmaking aimed at the teenage audience who frequented the drive-ins of America. They frolicked, screamed, and danced their way into B-movie history in such diverse films as Eve, Teenage Millionaire, The Girls on the Beach, Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine, Three in the Attic, Wild in the Streets, and Paradise, Hawaiian Style. This book is a celebration of the actresses' careers. They have for the most part been overlooked in other publications documenting the history of film. Fantasy Femmes addresses their film and television careers, focusing on their view of the above genres, their candid comments and anecdotes about their films, the people they worked with, and their feelings in general regarding their lives and the choices they made. The book is well illuminated and contains a complete list of film and television credits.
