Description: [This] book ... provides a detailed analysis of what we need to do to effectively build and sustain enduring partnerships, examines our current state, and provides a roadmap with specific, actionable recommendations to strengthen our processes and employ a holistic joint, interagency, intergovernmental, and multinational approach to partnerships. Two of the insights that I think we often miss are that our partners have a say in the process and that we need to manage the process as an integrated portfolio and make investment/reinvestment decisions based upon capability objectives that we and our partners agree upon. The U.S. military simply cannot engage alone. Partnership must be planned and executed in order to set meaningful objectives as well as to synchronize available resources to achieve them.

Description: "There was very fine, an elegant pain, hardly a pain at all, like the swift and fleeting burn of a drop of hot candle wax...Then the blood welled up and began to distort the pure, stark edges of my delicately wrought wound. "The chaos in my head spun itself into a silk of silence. I had distilled myself to the immediacy of hand, blade, blood, flesh." There are an estimated two to three million "cutters" in America, but experts warn that, as with anorexia, this could be just the tip of the iceberg of those affected by this little-known disorder. Cutting has only just begun to enter public consciousness as a dangerous affliction that tends to take hold of adolescent girls and can last, hidden and untreated, well into adulthood. Caroline Kettlewell is an intelligent woman with a promising career and a family. She is also a former cutter, and the first person to tell her own story about living with and overcoming the disorder. She grew up on the campus of a boys' boarding school where her father taught. As she entered adolescence, the combination of a family where frank discussion was avoided and life in what seemed like a fishbowl, where she and her sister were practically the only girls the students ever saw, became unbearable for Caroline. She discovered that the only way to find relief from overpowering feelings of self-consciousness, discomfort, and alienation was to physically hurt herself. She began cutting her arms and legs in the seventh grade, and continued into her twenties. Why would a rational person resort to such extreme measures? How did she recognize and overcome her problem? In a memoir startling for its honesty, humor, and poignancy, Caroline Kettlewell offers a clear-eyed account of her own struggle to survive this debilitating affliction.

Description: Seven days, seven challenges. Twelve strangers. Eight thousand cameras. Only one winner. Welcome to The Ant Farm, a social study in the wilds of interior Alaska, documenting the dynamics between a dozen competitors as they take part in a series of physical and psychological face-offs. With five hundred grand up for grabs at the end of the battle royal, the stakes are high and the tension blazing. Could the seemingly mild-mannered nice guy win it all? The cutthroat alpha female? The strongest or the smartest, the idealist or the cynic? It's anyone's guess as teams are undercut by alliances, loyalties tendered and tested, and passions enflamed by both affection and animosity. In this contest where even knives and guns are fair game, sex may prove the most dangerous weapon of all.

Description: The saga of Dark Angel continues! Someone is killing normal humans in the fog-enshrouded city of Seattle. The murders are brutal and grisly, but inside Terminal City they barely cause a ripple of concern. The transgenics who live there have problems of their own. In an area under siege by the oppressive arm of the police, the transgenics must protect their fledgling colony against the outside world—a world that eyes them with contempt and suspicion . . . and will do anything to be rid of them. As the killings escalate, Joshua comes to Max with a dire suspicion: the killer may be one of their own. Tensions are high between normal humans and transgenics, and many inside the protected City would just as soon let the humans fend for themselves. Yet Max and her inner circle know they must investigate the crimes and stop the bloodshed. Doing nothing would simply give the normals more reasons to hate. But what they discover will shock even the most jaded among them—and expose a sinister agenda that leads to an old, nefarious foe. . . .

Description: Christians are longing for more life in their lives, a sense that they’re more present to Jesus and to their own story in the everyday. They’re looking for the answer to the deepest question of human experience: “How do I find the freedom I crave, and become the person I long to be?” Too often, though, they’re scared to risk too much to find the answer—so they simply continue to lead lives of “quiet desperation.” Rick Lawrence says that’s exactly the problem. We’ve seen too much. We know too much. And so we manage our risk so well that we choke off the very fuel that our soul needs to stay alive. In fact, risk should be a primary aspect of our relationship with Jesus, not the thing we avoid. In this book, Lawrence argues that if we pay attention to the way Jesus related to people, we discover that he asked every person he ever met to put their “skin in the game”—invest part of themselves. Only then did they find the life they always longed for. Lawrence asks eight key questions, including: • Will you embrace your shame? • Will you receive grace? • Will you confront your fears? • Will you wait, even when all hope is lost? With a vigorous, fast-paced, and conversational style, he uses these questions plus stories straight from Scripture and pop-culture corollaries to explore the kinds of risks we find in our lives today and how to stop waiting and start going all in for Jesus.

Description: “Major General Dennis Laich is a citizen, a soldier, and a patriot. In Skin in the Game, he invites Americans to reflect on this very hard truth: the all-volunteer force is a bad bargain. Basic US military policy needs changing. Here is an essential guide on where to begin.” —Andrew J. Bacevich, author of Breach of Trust: How Americans Failed Their Soldiers and Their Country Major General Dennis Laich makes a compelling case that the all-volunteer force no longer works in a world defined by terrorism, high debts, and widening class differences. He sets up his argument by posing three fundamental questions: Is the all-volunteer force working? Will it work in the future? What if we had a war and no one showed up on our side? The answers to these questions become all too clear once you learn that less than one percent of US citizens have served in the military over the last twelve years—even though we’ve been fighting wars the entire time. What’s more, most of that one percent comes from poor and middle-class families, which poses numerous questions about social justice. This one percent—the ones that survive—will bear the scars of their service for the rest of their lives, while the wealthy and well-connected sit at home. Fortunately, there are alternatives that could provide the manpower to support national security, close the civil-military gap, and save taxpayers billions of dollars per year. It’s possible to fight for what’s right while ensuring a bright future, Laich offers a wake-up call that a debt-burdened nation in a dangerous world cannot afford to ignore.

Description: It's an age-old axiom: if you don't support the war, you don't support the troops. And Peggy Logue couldn't disagree more. When Peggy's nineteen-year-old son, U.S. Marine Michael Logue, is deployed to a volatile area of Iraq, Peggy suddenly faces an alarming challenge to her mama bear sensibilities. She struggles to remain silent, desperate to protect her son. Peggy's protests, her stress over Mike's deployment, and her fierce pride in her son hurtle her along an emotional roller coaster for the entire year of Mike's tour. She asks the tough questions and demands answers. What she discovers, however, is human nature's predilection for violence. Only by becoming warriors for peace will war cease to exist. Intense, raw, and profoundly honest, Skin in the Game illustrates the human side of war and the daily struggle for peace. But even more, it is the story of the struggle of an anti-war mama bear and her son in combat listening, respecting, and truly loving each other.

Description: "It was the week before Christmas... and time for the annual raid on Sonia´s whorehouse." The Skin Game ... and other Atlantic City capers is the story of the days when Atlantic City hit bottom and bet its future on casinos - a story that begins with the robbery of a card game in which gunmen order their victims to strip, then jam them into the men´s room. Tim Donovan´s first jury trial is the defense of one of the robbers, a 17 year prison veteran who teaches what the law professors didn´t. He learns even more from hookers like nearsighted Mary, who couldn´t spot a cops shoes, and slow-thinking Cindy who wants Donovan to get her baby back. Woven through the young lawyer´s caseload are Atlantic City´s civic hustlers, angling for the legalization of casinos even as the state police raid the judge´s illegal slot machines at the fraternal lodge and the press breaks the story of a motorcycle cop who sold his police hog to state troopers in an undercover sting operation. Written with fast-paced humor and underlying sympathy for the law´s victims, Tim Donovan´s clients and their problems make The Skin Game a book that gets you laughing ... and thinking. "The funniest cast of legal and illegal characters since Rumpole of the Bailey. Joe Wilkins knows Atlantic City like the back of his hand. His stories brim over with the antics of Atlantic City´s hookers, politicians, cops -- and the occasional client who arrives on the back of a garbage truck." Louis Toscano author of Triple Cross and Senior Policy Advisor to former Atlantic City Mayor James Whelan "I laughed so hard I had tears in my eyes! Highly Recommended!" Description: John Galsworthy first published in 1897 with a collection of short stories entitled -The Four Winds-. For the next 7 years he published these and all works under his pen name John Sinjohn. It was only upon the death of his father and the publication of -The Island Pharisees- in 1904 that he published as John Galsworthy. His first play was The Silver Box, an immediate success when it debuted in 1906 and was followed by -The Man of Property- later that same year and was the first in the Forsyte trilogy. Whilst today he is far more well know as a Nobel Prize winning novelist then he was considered a playwright dealing with social issues and the class system. We publish here 'The Skin Game' a great example of both his writing and his demonstration of how the class system worked at the time. He was appointed to the Order of Merit in 1929, after earlier turning down a knighthood, and awarded the Nobel Prize in 1932 though he was too ill to attend. John Galsworthy died from a brain tumour at his London home, Grove Lodge, Hampstead on January 31st 1933. In accordance with his will he was cremated at Woking with his ashes then being scattered over the South Downs from an aeroplane.

Description: This book is about racism and colorism in the African American community. It will inform you on how colorism was founded by racism throughout the 17th century with Europeans. It also will show you how we as Black people hold on to traits that were given to us during slavery. This book will get into how so many things we perceive to be good, and even holy started from racism, things such as religion, and the hate and separation we have as descendants of enslaved Africans toward each other. This book is more than just food for thought, but it will dig deep into the very core of your heart and soul. In this book I will convince you that we as a people cannot do anything to help support, and promote ourselves unless we are looked at as nationalist, or a cult, but every other group of people who are white, Chinese, Hispanics, Arabs, or any other group of people can make it a necessity to help their own.

Description:

PI Jim Bean should walk out that door and let the Vegas bouncer do his worst. That\'s what an ordinary man would do. But nobody ever accused Jim Bean of being ordinary.

Private investigator Jim Bean has worked hard to create his new identity in Vegas. He doesn\'t have a great life, but it\'s his. When his ex-fiancée Erica Floyd walks into one of his investigations looking for her missing sister, the tragic past he wanted to leave behind comes flooding back.

Despite serious reservations, Jim agrees to search for Erica\'s sister. Clues lead him to a human trafficking ring and one of Vegas\'s most influential mobsters. Unless Jim can face the ghosts of his past, the anger of his present, and a new enemy out for his blood, four women will suffer a fate worse than death.

Praise for Skin Game:

\"With one foot in the classic PI tradition and the other in the new age, Skin Game is no roll of the dice. J.D. Allen delivers a smart, fast-paced book that will keep the reader on edge from start to finish.\"—Reed Farrel Coleman, New York Times bestselling author of What You Break

\"Skin Game is a very solid adventure through the Las Vegas underworld.\"—Crimespree Magazine

\"Skin Game never tries to be more than it is, and that works in its favor. Instead, fully engaging with the expected tropes, Allen turns the novel into something akin to comfort food for those who enjoy this type of story. That is important and will surely make fans of classic PI novels place Allen on their radar and keep an eye out for whatever she does next.\"—Criminal Element

Praise for 19 Souls, Book 1 of the Sin City Investigation series:

\"[Allen\'s] plotting and pacing will keep you up long after Proust and Henry James have rocked you to sleep. Stay tuned for a series that promises many, many more troubled dreams.\"—Kirkus Reviews

\"Bean\'s inner and outer dialogue is quick, snappy, and authentic to the profession. The pace is earnest, as leads, tips, and information eventually congeal into answers; final pages are highly suspenseful and dramatic. 19 Souls introduces a memorable PI, grappling with a past he\'s not reconciled to.\"—Foreword Reviews

\"Overall, a must read for thriller fans and perhaps the best PI story we have read this year so far.\"—Mystery Tribune

\"19 Souls is one terrific read. With a great plot, engaging characters, and a crackling voice, this book has everything. I dare you to put it down after you start reading.\"—John Gilstrap, New York Times bestselling author

\"The setup is so good, and the characters so hard to look away from...All in all, a fine thriller.\"—Booklist

\"Twisty, authentic, and constantly surprising! JD Allen nails her debut with this top-notch thriller—it\'s gritty, smart and irresistible.\"—Hank Phillippi Ryan, nationally bestselling author
