Description: An old-school PI is plunged into modern danger and conspiracy in Fast Shuffle, a gripping mystery from TV screenwriter and producer David Black. Harry Dickinson is a used car salesman living in Springdale, Massachusetts, who believes he is a private detective. His girlfriend, Friday, finds this charming, though she warns him not to get carried away. The local cops are becoming fed up with him. His sister and brother-in-law think he's unstable and too old for such fantasies. They want him locked up. When Harry stumbles upon the case of a missing woman, he decides to investigate. However, the situation is far more complex-and more dangerous-than he imagines. Turning to the authorities only makes things worse. Harry witnesses a murder, but no one believes him. With Harry and Friday on the run-hunted by the police, the killer, and even Harry's friends and relatives-their chances for survival look grim. But the man everyone believes is crazy may be the only one who can crack the case. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Description: It is about the many facets of the horse racing industry: the horses, trainers, and grooms who care for them on the backside; a labor of love, not just a job; the exercise riders, jockeys; the fans; and the aspiration of Sherry, a young girl, to become a jockey, a challenging goal in the face of a male-dominated sport. Her mother died when she was young, so her father, who was a jockey, brought her with him to the racetrack in the morning. There is a close relationship between Sherry; Pop, the trainer; Tom, her father; Curley, her fathers agent; and Manuel, a young Mexican boy, who grooms Jimbo, the horse that is a catalyst that holds them all together. The book encompasses the problems faced in caring for Sherry when Tom is killed in a racing accident.

Description: Choreographing Copyright is a new historical and cultural analysis of U.S. dance-makers' investment in intellectual property rights. Stretching from the late nineteenth century to the early twenty-first, the book reconstructs efforts to win copyright protection for choreography and teases out their raced and gendered politics, showing how dancers have embraced intellectual property rights as a means to both consolidate and contest racial and gendered power. A number of the artists featured in the book are well-known in the history of American dance, including Loie Fuller, Hanya Holm, and Martha Graham, Agnes de Mille, and George Balanchine. But the book also uncovers a host of marginalized figures--from the South Asian dancer Mohammed Ismail, to the African American pantomimist Johnny Hudgins, to the African American blues singer Alberta Hunter, to the white burlesque dancer Faith Dane--who were equally interested in positioning themselves as subjects rather than objects of property. Drawing on critical race and feminist theories and on cultural studies of copyright, Choreographing Copyright offers fresh insight into the raced and gendered hierarchies that govern the theatrical marketplace, white women's historically contingent relationship to property rights, legacies of ownership of black bodies and appropriation of non-white labor, and the tension between dance's ephemerality and its reproducibility.

Description: Nearly two years after the economic meltdown, joblessness and foreclosures are still endemic, Wall Street executives are once again getting massive bonuses, and our leaders in Washington lack the will to make desperately needed fundamental changes to the economy. Change will have to come from below. Agenda for a New Economy is the handbook for that revolution. In this revised and updated edition David Korten has fleshed out his vision of the alternative to the corporate Wall Street economy: a Main Street economy based on locally owned, community-oriented “living enterprises” whose success is measured as much by their positive impact on people and the environment as by their positive balance sheet. We will lose nothing in the process because, as Korten ably demonstrates, the supposed services Wall Street offers are simply a con game. And Korten now offers more in-depth advice on how to mount a grassroots campaign to bring about an economy based on shared prosperity, ecological stewardship, and citizen democracy.

Description: Composing Apartheid is the first book ever to chart the musical world of a notorious period in world history, apartheid South Africa. It explores how music was produced through, and was productive of, key features of apartheid’s social and political topography, as well as how music and musicians contested and even helped to conquer apartheid. The collection of essays is intentionally broad, and the contributors include historians, sociologists and anthropologists, as well as ethnomusicologists, music theorists and historical musicologists. The essays focus on a variety of music (jazz, music in the Western art tradition, popular music) and on major composers (such as Kevin Volans) and works (Handel’s Messiah). Musical institutions and previously little-researched performers (such as the African National Congress’s troupe-in-exile, Amandla) are explored. The writers move well beyond their subject matter, intervening in debates on race, historiography, and postcolonial epistemologies and pedagogies.

Description: Veteran labor journalist Richard Steier explores the tensions between New York City’s public employee unions, their critics, and city and state politicians. Since 1980 Richard Steier has had a unique vantage point to observe the gains, losses, and struggles of municipal labor unions in New York City. He has covered those unions and city government as a reporter and labor columnist for the New York Post and, since 1998, as editor and featured columnist of the Chief-Leader, a century-old independent newspaper that covers city and state government in greater detail than today’s mainstream news organizations. Drawing from his column with the Chief-Leader, “Razzle Dazzle,” Enough Blame to Go Around describes in vivid terms how the changed economy has drastically altered the city’s labor landscape, and why it has been difficult for municipal unions to adapt. There can be no doubt, he writes, that public employee unions have contributed to the problems that confront them today, including corruption and failed leadership. But at the same time and for all their flaws, he believes unions represent the best chance for ordinary people to receive fair economic treatment. “No one knows New York City’s working men and women better than journalist Richard Steier. Whether he’s depicting the heroic exploits of legendary union leaders or exposing the excesses of corrupt labor bosses or recounting pivotal battles over labor contracts, Steier always provides fresh, behind-the-scenes insight into the vast world of municipal workers, a group that too often is unfairly maligned. And he does it all with a powerful bare-knuckle style that will leave you wishing for more.” — Juan Gonzalez, staff columnist, New York Daily News “If you want to know about municipal unions in New York City, you need to read Richard Steier. I sometimes disagree with him, but for more than two decades he has been one of the most informative and provocative chroniclers of the ins and outs of public sector labor.” — Joshua B. Freeman, author of American Empire: The Rise of a Global Power, the Democratic Revolution at Home, 1945–2000 “New York City’s labor unions have been luckier than they deserved to have had reporter and editor Richard Steier around to spotlight their occasional triumphs and their much more frequent failures. Like Murray Kempton, another great New York columnist who loved the men and women of labor but who never suffered the fools who sometimes ran their unions, Steier’s columns are filled with news, insight, and always compassion for those who ride (and drive) the early trains and buses to work.” — Tom Robbins, CUNY Graduate School of Journalism “Steier presents an impassioned case for public sector unions and the benefits they have won, along with fascinating tales of the machinations inside several of the largest unions in New York City—District Council 37, Transport Workers Union Local 100 and the 2005 strike that paralyzed the city, and the United Federation of Teachers.” — Alair Townsend, former New York City Budget Director and Deputy Mayor

Description: Alfred Adler states that The supreme law of life is this: The sense of worth shall not be allowed to be diminished. His view supports a central theme in Boss Canvasman. The setting involves the ODonnell family and ex-circus workers during the 1930s, a time of the Great Depression and Prohibition in the United States. Devlin ODonnell strives for a sense of well-being only to experience painful shame through the bizarre behavior of his brother, Egan. As Devlin seeks the love of Eileen Coleman, he fears Egans mannerisms will convince Eileen that Devlin is also mentally unbalanced. Throughout the narrative, he struggles to deny this interpretation. Egans closeness to his mother, Maura, adds mystery to the novel. Determined to uncover its meaning, Devlin engages in a search that brings him to a secret Egan shares with Maura. At a pivotal point in the tale, the mystery unfolds, and Devlin explodes in drastic action. The ex-circus people provide further structure to the narrative. Jerry Burke is a former boss canvasman, the person responsible for erection of the main tent. Sean Sweeny who had unloaded flatcars befriends Devlin. Seans ambiguous references to the boss canvasman puzzle Devlin, adding intrigue to the story. Injured in a circus accident, Sean longs for a return to the circus, a life maintaining his self-esteem. Seans use of Irish lore and circus language bind the novel together metaphorically. His desire for recognition creates disturbing consequences for himself and Devlin.

Description: Since 1941 the Medal of Honor has been more often awarded to dead than to living men. Of all the medals issues by the United States Government, this singular medal has had a particularly solemn glory attached to its meaning. But a look at its history reveals that, from its inception, it was steeped in controversy, with threats to its integrity swirling in from all sides. Author John. J. Pullen, during the course of research on the 20th Maine, came across an obscure note indicating that the 27th Maine, a group of nine-month volunteers from York Country, had been issued 864 Medals of Honor—one for every member of the regiment—while the 20th main, having distinguished itself at Little Round Top, garnered only four such medals. Was this discovery the beginning of an untold story of extraordinary bravery, or was it an outrageous blunder? Civil War literature yielded nothing about this wholesale “shower of stars” that had rained down upon the little-known regiment. And, as Pullen tracked down its descendants, he found very little information on the whereabouts of those medals. Thus, a mystery was born. After sifting through piles of War Department documents, as well as letters and diaries found in Maine’s “unofficial archives,” Pullen begins to pieces together a puzzle that had already ensnared many, from Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton to such notable figures as Theodore Roosevelt. The hero of this story, however, is Colonel Mark F. Wentworth, the commander of the 27th Maine and later of the 32nd Maine, who thwarted the forces that threatened ignominy on the Medal of Honor, and revealed the true character of valor. “The author has written a fascinating, leisurely book, often disarming in its personal approach to unraveling his mystery” – E. B. Long, Chicago Tribune

Description: In England, there is an enchanted wood, which is owned by Lady Lock. Lady Lock is a good witch, and she has made the wood a sanctuary for all magical creatures, even to giving boy leprechauns sanctuary against the girls of their own species. The reason the boys needed help in keeping out of the clutches of girl leprechaun’s is because, as soon as a girl leprechaun comes of age to marry, they are given the gift of a stare by their mothers, which will make any un-married male do exactly what she tells him. However, once a girl is wed, she needs no help in getting her husband to do exactly what she tells him. The reason for this, is the night the girl is wed, she grows overnight to be two feet tall, (sixty centimetres) from just six inches, (fifteen centimetres), which completely dwarfs a boy, who does not grow to anymore than one foot six inches, ( forty-five centimetres). This is the story of ten such boy leprechauns, who found themselves in the wood, some from out of choice, and others from just blind luck. It also tells of how many of the girl leprechauns got their man, and of three boy leprechauns who went to the wood, but not for sanctuary, but to get their hands on the others coins. We also get to meet a very strange character, who is a member of the tidy police, and we get to join in an epic battle between the witch who owns the wood, and her archrival, who just happens to be a four-wart witch.

Description: Robert Farrar Capon is well known as the author of the modern classic The Supper of the Lamb (“awesomely funny, wise, beautiful, moving, preposterous,” said The New York Times) and other acclaimed books such as Genesis, the Movie. In Light Theology & Heavy Cream: The Culinary Adventures of Pietro & Madeleine, Capon returns to the kitchen to present a spirited collection of pieces he describes as “culinary and theological snack food.” Providing significant nutritive value in terms of both cooking and thinking, Capon offers them “as a lark.” The protagonists of this endeavor are Pietro and Madeleine, a husband and wife with clear resemblances to the author and his wife, Valerie. With Capon's signature wit and precision, Pietro and Madeleine explore such diverse topics as creativity, addiction, televangelism, spirituality, the correct way to slice a leg of lamb, and the virtues of diners. “Given the irony of a God who saves the world by foolishness and weakness,” Capon writes, “and the hilarity by which he gives us corn, wine, and oil—not to mention his wonderfully two-faced creatures such as butter, salt, tobacco, and pork fat—this is no world in which to land on one side of a paradox.” Nibbling away on Light Theology & Heavy Cream is to encounter an author who has “always been perfectly substantial and perfectly silly at the same time,” but here “propels himself faster and farther in both directions.” “You challenge me to match the sum total of the world's miseries with a fast, but then you complain that I fall short because I have eaten lobster instead of beetles or something. Why, I could starve myself stone cold to death and still fall short. To use your very own argument, the world's miseries are tractable only to God's grace, not my merits. A lobster, obediently ingested, can remind me of that as well as anything else, eaten or not eaten, on the same principle.” —from the first chapter

Description: When it comes to the vagaries of language in American politics, its uses and abuses, its absurdities and ever-shifting nuances, its power to confound, obscure, and occasionally to inspire, William Safire is the language maven we most readily turn to for clarity, guidance, and penetrating, sometimes lacerating, wit. Safire's Political Dictionary is a stem-to-stern updating and expansion of the Language of Politics, which was first published in 1968 and last revised in 1993, long before such terms as Hanging Chads, 9/11 and the War on Terror became part of our everyday vocabulary. Nearly every entry in that renowned work has been revised and updated and scores of completely new entries have been added to produce an indispensable guide to the political language being used and abused in America today. Safire's definitions--discursive, historically aware, and often anecdotal--bring a savvy perspective to our colorful political lingo. Indeed, a Safire definition often reads like a mini-essay in political history, and readers will come away not only with a fuller understanding of particular words but also a richer knowledge of how politics works, and fails to work, in America. From Axis of Evil, Blame Game, Bridge to Nowhere, Triangulation, and Compassionate Conservatism to Islamofascism, Netroots, Earmark, Wingnuts and Moonbats, Slam Dunk, Doughnut Hole, and many others, this language maven explains the origin of each term, how and by whom and for what purposes it has been used or twisted, as well as its perceived and real significance. For anyone who wants to cut through the verbal haze that surrounds so much of American political discourse, Safire's Political Dictionary offers a work of scholarship, wit, insiderhood and resolute bipartisanship.

Description: This is the story of the last mounted American troops to see action in battle, when, in late 1941, six-hundred men and their horses held off the Japanese invasion of Luzon in the Philippines just long enough to allow General Douglas MacArthur's forces to withdraw to Bataan. The 26th continued to fight on horseback until late February 1942 when, tragically, they were ordered dismounted and their horses and mules transferred to the Quartermaster's center and slaughtered for food for the defenders. It is on record that the 26th troopers refused to accept meat rations from their animals, regardless of their own starvation. This stirring account of a little-known aspect of the Philippine campaign is military history at its best.

Description: As a teenager, Ron Reynolds trekked across the United States and overseas in quest of adventure. Stints as carnival worker, ranch hand, cabana boy, and lifeguard to a deckhand on the China seas could not quench his thirst for excitement until the nineteen-year-old Buffalo, New York, adventurer saw a poster in Paris luring him to a five-year enlistment in the famed French Foreign Legion. For eighteen months, that dream became a horrible nightmare of senseless desert killings and brutal and sadistic treatment, including a thirty-day imprisonment in a desert dungeon at the hands of a half-crazed Turk. Finally, after two unsuccessful attempts to escape in which he barely survived the punishments, Ron was determined to make it to freedom or take his own life by falling on his bayonet. His daring escape, filled with terror and suspense, was bittersweet. The Yankee mercenary found himself a man without a country and a price on his head by the French government. In essence, he had escaped to nowhere. He says that if he had to do it over again, he would take the easy way out—in front of a firing squad. On a happy note, Ron Reynolds is once again an American citizen.
